So how do you get clarity on what great performance looks like?
Start with your organisations vision and strategy – where do you see the organisation in 5-10 years and what are the strategic imperatives you plan to build from.
Make sure that your people understand the need for change – what are the external drivers; how you are viewed by the competition, customers and potential employees; what’s the potential implications if no change happens?
Create a simple and compelling message of why your people should join you on the journey – what can they expect ‘on the ride’ and what’s in it for them?
Then make the connection between the overall strategy, translating it into an overall performance promise for the organisation that is simple to understand and to share with your people
The business performance promise becomes the foundation for team and individual performance promises. These are regularly reviewed and updated so everyone knows how they and the business is performing in a transparent and timely manner. This means that actions can be taken swiftly if performance moves "off course".
Communicating and celebrating success is key to maintaining motivation and commitment to the overarching goal – sharing what is going well and where actions are off track, what learnings you can apply and quickly identifying where new solutions are required.
